It's estimated one in five vehicles sold in the U.S. will be battery-powered by 2030. In Florida alone, electric vehicle ownership has increased more than 300% since 2013, making it the fourth largest EV state in the country.

Whether you already own or are thinking of acquiring an EV, learn more about electric vehicles, benefits, and FPL’s initiative to advance the future of EVs.

Electric vehicle benefits

There are many benefits to owning an EV, from environmental to financial. Electric vehicles can help reduce carbon emissions and help to diversify fuel choices for transportation in the United States. Drivers also save money on fuel because electricity is less expensive than fuel. Electric vehicles are also more efficient than gasoline vehicles.

Charging electric vehicles

Your electric vehicle needs to be charged regularly to maximize its range and you can use any of these chargers:

  • Level 1: Any connector you have at home. No installation or additional charging equipment required.
  • Level 2: Requires special charging equipment. These are usually found in workplaces and public charging stations.
  • DC Fast Chargers: Require highly specialized equipment. These can be found at special charging stations along highway corridors.

Types of EVs

If you are thinking about purchasing an EV, you will need to find the electric vehicle that is right for you:

  • An all-electric vehicle (AEV) is powered solely by electric batteries, which recharge every time it's plugged into the electric grid.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) use batteries that can be recharged by plugging into the grid and also use fuel to power the engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will driving an electric vehicle affect my electric bill?

  • The cost of driving an EV is just pennies per mile compared to gasoline. FPL’s standard electric rate is about 30 percent below the national average, and in general, every 1,000 miles of charge would impact your electric bill by less than $40 a month.
  • This varies based on driving style, habits, temperature, and the efficiency rating of your vehicle, among other factors.

What is EV range?

An electric vehicle range refers to the driving range a vehicle can operate using only power from its electric battery. Currently, there are numerous electric vehicle models in the market and the average battery range for new models can exceed 200 miles.

What should I know before purchasing an electric vehicle?

If you are considering purchasing an electric vehicle there are some factors to consider in order to choose the right car for you.

  • Choosing the vehicle that fits your total range of travel is very important, electric vehicles vary in range anywhere from 150 to 350 miles per full charge.
  • Know where you can charge your vehicle. It’s important to understand your daily commute and the places where you will be able to charge along the way.
  • Are you able to charge your vehicle at your place of residence? Most EVs can charge on a standard 120-volt outlet, however, the charge from the standard outlet is slow. You can also have a 240 –volt Level 2 charging station installed, which will charge your vehicle much faster. If you live in a multi-unit dwelling (e.g. apartment, townhome, condo, etc.), it’s important to understand the charging capabilities of the building. If your place of residence does not offer EV charging, you can find public charging stations near your area at FPL.com/evolution.

How far can I travel per charge in my EV?

Electric vehicle range varies depending on the size of the battery, the type and weight of the car, road and weather conditions, driving style, and ancillary usage, such as running the air conditioning or charging your cell phone. Please refer to your vehicle manual to determine how much range you have.
